Powerbanks also called external batteries, are currently a popular accessory for owners of smartphones and similar devices. Nowadays, we can no longer imagine our mobile phones running out of power at the wrong moment. That's why there are external power sources that we can use to charge our devices anywhere and anytime.
Nowadays, power banks with a lower capacity serve more as a last resort that does not charge a discharged smartphone to 100%. If you're travelling somewhere and won't be able to use a mains charger there, we recommend an external battery with a higher capacity. On the other hand, an external battery with a lower capacity has a very compact size and you can carry it practically anywhere.
Powerbanks are not only for mobile phones, those with higher capacity can also recharge other devices such as tablets and laptops. Although manufacturers indicate the capacity on external batteries, the actual value varies in some cases by as much as 30%.
The powerbank states capacity in mAh and output voltage 3.6V while devices such as mobile phones use up to 5V voltage and here is where the difference in what the manufacturer states and the actual capacity of the external battery for devices that use a higher voltage arises.
Another important figure quoted by most manufacturers is the efficiency of the external battery, which is approximately 90%. One company even quotes up to 93%. If you put all these figures into a simple formula you will get the actual capacity of the powerbank.
mAh x 3.6V / 5V =
10 400 x 3.6 / 5 = 7 488mAh
mAh x 3.6V / 5V x 93% =
10 400 x 3.6 / 5 x 0.93 = 6 964mAh
Batteries work on the principle of a chemical reaction that results in an electrical charge. The ampere hour (Ah) is the unit used to express this charge, but in the field of mobile devices, the thousandth of an ampere hour (mAh) is more commonly used.
This value indicates what is the maximum continuous current transferred to your device. That is, if the powerbank supports 1A output current, your device should receive 1000 mAh in one hour.
